95 neon problems...LONG
i am new hereso please be gentle!
i have a 95 sohc. recently it has started bogging when i drive the car. also it has trouble accelerating until it hits a certain speed and thenit drives fine. from reading posts i thought it could be the fuel pump or fuel filter. i have recently changed the spark plugs and wires.
i took it pep boys and 2 hours later they called me and said that there was an engine knock, misfire in cylinder 1 and that the car wouldnt go into reverse.they also said that the pressure from the fuel pump was fine. so when i went to pick it up it didnt look like they had even moved the car and when i went to back it out, it reversed fine. pep boys also refused to do a diagnostics onthe careven though i was willing to pay.
i took the car to another place but they wont be able to look at it until monday. after further reading on the posts, im thinking the problem could be the tps.
any help or suggestions i would greatly appreciate. i dont know anything about cars although im am learning from this forum.
thanks again

ok i swear whats up with the bogging down. anyways...how bad has it been bogging down? cause on my Neon under hard accel. or half throttle or really anywhere when accelerating lol it would bog down and i found out that my cat. was/is clogged as well has my fuel pump was going bad....and take your Neon to autozone and have them hook their computer up to the cars computer to get the codes...or do this to get the codes. put the key in but dont start it at all. and go like this "start, off, start, off, start, off, start" and then look at the check engine light and u will see it begin to flash and it will be like this
"flash flash flash flash flash. pause. flash flash flash flash flash." thats code 55 and it means that there is no more codes.
PS. is your check engine light even on?

i forgot to add that the car was an automatic. at first the bogging wasnt so bad i could mostly only feel it if i was at a red light. its almost like it was revving to accelerate. about a week later it got worse and i felt like i had to stand on the gas pedal to get it moving. yes the check engine light came on. as i was driving it to the mechanic it started flashing....
How many miles on the car.? I dont think a tps would cause an engine misfire....Im thinking maybe more along the lines of a coil pack going pack.Same thing just happened to me.
I would recommend taking it to autozone as neoncrazy suggested. They can tell you why the check engine light is on...for free.) They are gonna ask what year the car is, and when you tell them 95, there gonna say they prolly cant do it.I think it's cause there lazy and dont want to go outside.I think a very very few select 95's may not have had the obd-2 system...but I could be wrong there too.Anyways, Im pretty sure your fine.Get those codes and it will help us greatly to determine the problem.Or at least it will help me to help you.I posted 4 codes I got on my neon not too long ago, and everyone guessed the fuel pump.It was the coil pack though....but I could see why they were guessing fuel pump..:P
For the record....all the people I have ever seen working at pep-boys knew a LOT less about cars then me, and they have given me the wrong part on at least a few occasions.pep boys sucks, they hire anyone.I walked up to the counter last time, and got to her some fat young girl tell another guy."this is the worst day of my life"...I dont need no stupid teen drama from an auto parts repair place.I could go on and on about pep boys...but I'll just say...THEY SUCK..only reason I ever use them is when every other store is closed.
I had to spend new years at a friends, and leave my car alongside road, cause those morons gave me a coil pack with the wrong plug, after I took at least 5 min. to exlpain the 95-96.5 had a different plug then 96.5-99 neons.I called back and they told me they had one with a wire harness on it....WTF could'nt they give me that one to begin with.? It's all in their computer, they just to dumb to read the screen.
Anyways...yea, see what you can get for codes, and get back with us....good luck

prplhaze,
thanks for the reply. i just called the mechanic that my car is at right now. the guy said he hasnt gotten a chance to look at it because the car wont go in reverse. if i come to think of that has happened to me once before but after i let it warm up, it was fine.any other ideas?

if u go to autozone and such just say its a 98 lol...same codes and such as the 95 so that way they cant say that it wont work....anyways if u have a volt meter u can check the voltage at the pack. i'm not sure how many volts (or whatever they call it lol) are but i can find out for u tonight.
i just called the mechanic that has my car. he said he wasnt able to look at as it wont go out of reverse. he suggested taking it to a transmission place...
