Default EGR Valve Help!!!

Hi guys,

I have a strange situation with my 95 SOHC 5-speed Highline neon. About two weeks ago the CEL came on, I took my neon to autozone, the guy read the code and said that its my EGR Valve that needed to be replaced. Code P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected. I went to a local dealership and they said that THIS PART DOESNT EXIST for 95 neons???? Is this true, 95 neons DO NOT HAVE EGR VALVES ???? after the read , the check engine light went off and hasn't come on yet. Should I be worried? my car is runing fine, although it sounds a bit strange, sounds like when I had a hole in my catalist converter. Proly its the muffler, its pretty rusty. I need help with this supposedly NONexisting EGR valve issue? any advice is appreciated.

My 95 sohc highline had an egr valve Im sure of it.I bought the blockoff plates for it..never given me a problem again.. Sounds to me like your egr tube could be clogged. The tube usually clogs right at the throttle body, its a steel tube that goes in underneath the throttle body.Pull that tube off and look inside there...I bet it's got all sorts of black gunk.[:'(]

Dealer obviously dont know what there talking about. If you decide to just block off the egr..you might want to get some black tape to cover the check engine light.:P

thanks for the quick reply.

I have some additional questions. I am still a newb when it comes down to fixing problems on my car so bare with me. As far as the EGR tube being clogged.. what can cause this? and also is there a way to see if the EGR valve is still good? what do you mean by blockoff plates for EGR valve? are these aftermaket parts not OEM i guess? thanks

the tube in question is the recirculating tube, i didnt by the block off kit, but merly cut the tube at both ends leaving about an inch of tube on each mounted part, and took a vise and bent it over and over to seal it. you can take the actual egr vavle off and use carb cleaner to clean it out, that might be a cheap way to get it back up to par. and yes, 95 neons had the egr, later neons got rid of it and went with a different system. like i stated in your other post, get a haynes manual.

I wouldn't ever go back to that dealership....what an idiot. The EGR valve is present on the 95-99 neons for sure.

If you have emissions check with your inspection, then blocking off the EGR isn't a good idea. Also, blocking it off will cause the CEL to light up unless you have an aftermarket PCM on your car.

You can try cleaning it up and reinstalling it, but usually it's the transducer that goes bad, not necessarily the valve or get a new one.

If you look at what it stands for, it kinda tells ya...Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve. It takes some of the excess exhaust gas and recirculates it back into the engine to help with the environment. This causes your TB and intake manifold to get dirtier with soot.

You won't gain any HP by blocking it off, just an annoying CEL unless you have an aftermarket PCM or hooj up the resistor.
