My 1992 150 has started "jerking" when in overdive. Not all the time but seems worse when the truck is cold but also does it when warmed up. Running between 55-65 you feel it jerk like the transmission is slipping or the engine is missing. I don't know what to test to see if it's tranny or engine, or both. If I accelerate or push the OD lockout button the jerking stops. It started jerking really bad one night and I replaced the plugs, wires, distributor and rotor (all original and the truck now has 85k miles) and it it seemed to remove 99% of the problem. Thanks in advance for you help.

 

You maybe getting an engine misfire, Since you didn't have before the tune up,or maybe a valve seat has dropped to cause a misfire.

 

Sounds like torque convertor lockup problems. First thing I would recommend is a tranny fluid and filter change and the correct fluid installed. Could also be a loose connector or corrosion on the Throttle Position Sensor on the throttle body. Possible torque convertor lockup solenoid going bad.

 

have the trans adjusted.

not sure about yours, but there should be 2 internal adjusters (low and reverse) and one external (maybe, diesels have em) for the main band. make it to a very reputable trans shop please.

if the trans is really at 85k, ask about a full trans flush. adjustment and filter extra [:@][:'(][>:][][&o][:-][sm=sorry.gif]

lookin $150 or so for flush, then filter, and adjust....

 

The reverse band nut is internal(1) and the 2nd band nut is external(1),and neither will have an effect on your issue.Want to eliminate it being a lockup issue,do a fluid change with chrysler fluid and add two bottles of limited slip diffadditive.If the problem is gone,it's converter shudder.If it's less pronounced,the converter clutch may have extensive wear.

 

if he is experiencinganother problem with the trans, an adjustment wont hurt.

could be clogged filter, bad tc, or any number of things. start with the less cosatly and work your way around. you dont want to dump a crap load of cash and find out it was a clogged filter or needed adjustment.

it may also be the tps (throttle position sensor). they go bad and kick the autos in and out of OD with out warning.

 

A restrictive filter would cause a delayed engagement! I should have asked what trans is in the truck?Is it a A-518 an A-500?The early 518's are non-lockup.

If your reverse band adjustment(only one)screw and locking nut were in the pan you would have no reverse!You meanvisible when you dropthe pan .There is NO main band.The intermediate(2nd)band adjusting screw and locking nut are external.Where is your third adjuster????
