86 ram engine question Please help!
Id like to know what part this is and if its important? Does it look easily repairable? should i bother repairing it?
I got a 86 ram with a v8 that has the same part and its all screwed up.. (check the pics)
The 1st one is not my engine however on mine it has the same piece and its in bad shape.(as shown in the pix).... (the metal part going to rear of engine is broken in half, and the other side hose is disconnected and has a hole in it , nothing else is attached also the main piece the hoses connect to has bullet hole type meltings on it )
Does this thing need to be replaced or fixed? as you can see in one of the pix on the left of the engine is where one of the hoses connects to (you can see dark marks on the plug wires from exhaust comming out of the tube - im guessing).... what would cause melting of that 1 piece as shown in the pix? anyone have any insight on this situation

kind of off subject but im also curious what this is and why 1 hose is going into it and the other seems to be missing!
theres also a pic of the engine overall.. hows it look?? dont know much about engines want to see if its in good shape.

That part is your air pump it is to help lower emmisions. Some people take them off and seal of the metal hoses coming off of the exaust manifolds. If you have to pass emmision test in you area thenyou will need to repair the pump and the lines. If you don't have to worry about emmisions than don't worry about it, I would check to see if there are exaust coming out of the metal hoses that are attached to the exaust manifolds if so than they need to be sealed off.
That is a check valve for your smog system. The part right under it that doesn't have a belt is the air pump. If you aren't subject to emissions regulations you could take it all off. If you have to be tested it will be expensive to fix everything.

It looks like the last picture is of the charcoal cannister. Originally all of the fumes from the gas tank were routed through that to clean the air. On my truck the insides came apart and started sending pieces of charcoal through the lines and into the engine. It is all disconneced now and I'll probably remove the rest when I swap cabs.

seems I got screwed as the seller said it would pass emissions 100% for sure.
Live in AZ so thats required. kind of sucks....
Does that *charcole* module in my pic look like its functioning? or has someone disabled it also.
Also, if anyone would like to help me, here are some of its problems:::
Shifting from Park to R - or N to D - causes a huge THUD and the whole truck jerks violently (scares anyone standing near by haha)
Idles very high/rich ... if I try and idle it down with the screw it dies or goes back to idling high... wont *calm down* so you could say. It also dies if I idle it down so it seems to HAVE to be very rich or it will die... any ideas?

That sounds to me like a vacuum leak.First,make sure your carburetor is tightened down on the intake.If that is not it,start by checking vacuum lines that are loose or broken.

2. check with your local Emissions station to see what is actually required by law to be installed on the truck. I have see people fix things that don't even need to be there because the VIN and engine didnt really match. Maybe you'll get lucky?
3. Check to see if the air pump pulley(has no belt in your picture) will turn freely, if not you will need a salbvage yard special or a rebuilt one.
4. The diverter valve on top the air pump needs replaced along with the appropriate hoses.
5. I believe the steel tube runs to the back of the heads to inject air, looks like someone twisted it when they tried to take a check valve off. Those tubes can be a pain to find in good shape used...might find a new one?
6. Idle....is this truck a D150 or what? 318 or 360? 4bbl or 2bbl? Brand of carb? Snap a pic of the carb with the air filter off.
7. The charcoal canister is the least of your worries right now.
