Probably a torque converter or transmission problem. We need more information. What does it do in other gears? Have you checked the transmission fluid lately? When was the filter last changed? When was the last band adjustment done?

Check the trans fluid first. Do you know the proper way to check it?

The trans should be warm (in your case forget that) and the truck should be sitting level. Move the gear selector thru each range and back to park and then check the fluid level with the engine running. Things to look for. Is the level correct? Does the fluid smell burnt or is it dark? Are there air bubbles in the fluid?

My mistake, I was in a hurry and engaged my typing fingers before thinking. It should be Neutral. The difference is that in Park the converter does not completely fill with oil due to "intentionally" reduced line pressure. The "Park" location of the manual valve (inside the valve body) allows fluid to leak by a land of the valve thereby creating a line pressure drop. This low pressure in Park keeps the converter from completely filling and loading the engine unnecessarily. That gives a different level reading on the dip stick. Sorry for any confusion
