is there 12v at one of the old wires that ran to the alternator when you have the key on? if so i would use it.

Sounded like a good idea, I tried it, and the regulator instantly fried... $#@$

I think since that is part of the original voltage regulator it must have looped back on itself and charged till it blew...

Now im back to putting out 32 volts through the new regulator and going to rethink my strategy... that 160$ ECM at rockauto.com seems to be calling my name.

if you fried the voltage regulator you must have hooked something up wrong. did you test the wire you were using to power the voltage regulator. if you put power to the wrong voltage regulator wire you will fry it.

Figured it out, apparently my voltage regulator was never blown.... I had blown that 120amp fuse. That made it so there was 32v at the pcm on the alternator side of that fuse. I figured my regulator was gone so bought a new one and installed it. figured I wouldnt' install that new fuse until I saw 14v at the pcm and knew that I wasn't going to blow it. But without the fuse there you will always have somewhere around 30v on the alternator side.

Lesson learned.... If you see around 30 volts at the alternator but nothing is getting to the battery its the 120 amp fuse and not the regulator.

that is probably because the pcm gets it's voltage reading from the battery and when it is not seeing the 14V it should be it send the alternator a signal to crank up the voltage.

So now ive got the original harness hooked up and its working, and im pretty sure that if id used that wire from the original harness as my ignition positive on the remote voltage regulator it would have worked fine as well. just in case anyone else needs that info.

I need help to do this external regulator. My alt. is different than the one shown in this thread.Attached is a pic of my alt. on my 2005 ram 1500.
Does anyone here know if the connections are the same as the one shown in this thread compared to mine or other?

I'm willing to bet a 2005 is quite different than a 2nd gen ram is. Get a manual for yours and compare wiring schematics. Hate to see you fry the whole truck.
