Default spedometer issus 86 d100

well i finally got my 86 dodge d100 up an goin..it has a 727 trans 2wd

now when i took the motor/trans out it worked fine..

the spedometer gear/cabl is plug in correctly, and gear is in good shape.

now theres a 3 prong sensor on the drivers side of the trans...guess it went to reverse lights i left it unplugged...is that a speed sensor instead? lol

No speed sensor but I bet you don't have backup lights. It sounds like the neutral safety switch.

MOPAR SPEEDO GEAR-The Torqueflite transmission speedometer gear housing is an offset design to accommodate different diameter gears, be sure to rotate it to the proper position for the gear used.

Good point. Was the speedo gear removed at any time? There are numbers on the speedometer pinion adapter housing and a small indicator dot at the bottom of the hole on the case that must be lined up correctly to correspond with the number of teeth on the gear being used. You must also be sure that the tabs on the the retainer clamp go into the slots in the adapter housing.

Did you look at the gear since the first install when it didn't work? When the gear is installed incorrectly they can sometimes strip out. They are only plastic.

ok today i rechecked everything, i counted 32 teeth, put it on the number 32 lined up the dot an it still dont work

gear is fine, i didnt pull it out this time by accident..put a drill on the cable an the sped went up..

now there is a 38 right by the 32, then a groove..do i put it in that grove? id guess it was for a 32/38 tooth?

The groove should line up with the dot on the case next to the bottom of the hole. I don't know if the 86s used a reduction gear box between the cable and speedometer adapter. The 89s used them.
