Using a wiring diagram and meter/test light you need to check for voltages. Do you have 12 volts at both blades of fuse 5 when plugged in? Do the 4 way flashers work? Do the running/parking lights work? Are both high and low beams out?

Default The 1982 Service Manual Says...

You might also want to check the floor bright light dimmer switch.

Default Wiring Diagram from '82 Manual Part I of II

This might help if you don't have them. Select pages of the wiring diagram. Anyone wants them as a PDF, send me a PM. I am not sure if there is much difference between the '82 and your '85.

if there is power at the light sockets i would check the ground wires. they can cause all sorts of problems.

thanks pumbu, ill follow those diagrams and see what i come up with. fine time to find out my volt tester is broken. no flashes/hazards work at all. the tail lights and yellow lights on the side come on when i pull out the lights toggle. the inside light above the back window is out as well but the dash lights work. i still havent found the high beams yet either. whats the "floor bright light dimmer switch"?

there should be a switch on the floor that controls the high and low beam. when it goes bad it can stop the headlights from work all together. it would still not expain why your other lights are not working.
should look like this

I'VE SEEN THAT THING!!! I pressed it with my foot a couple times trying to figure out what it was. but your right, that shouldnt stop the other lights from working. guess ill go and press it a couple more to see if anything different happens...this sucks..
