Default Heat riser valve

Hi all
I was wondering which direction a heat riser valve
should rotate to open it?
This is on a 1986 318.
Thanks
Jerry

To the garbage can, imo. Mine didn't help with warmup any, and i think it was stuck open. Even with an open element filter and a 180 thermostat, it will warm up with 5 min of idling and a few hundred yards of driving at below freezing temperatures.

Ok. Maybe we arent talking about the same part. Mine was a piece of sheet metal around one manifold with a tube going from it to the intake.

That is to preheat the air going into the carb. to help with drivability before motor is fully warmed up.
The heat riser valve is normally located at the outlet of the exhaust manifold on the passenger side.

I believe that all of the trucks had them from the factory. At least
up here in Canada they did.
The coil on mine is broken and I want to wire it open but i don't
know which way to turn it. Has anyone done this before?

i don't think you need to worry about tying it open. if the spring is broke it is most likely going to stay open on its own.

Okay. I was just worried about it sticking closed and causing
problems.
Thanks

If it sticks totally closed you will know it immediately. The real problem is if it sticks partly closed and you just experience slight performance/overheating problems. I don't have one here in front of me, and I can't remember off the top of my head, so I can't tell you which way to lock it open but I can tell you how to find out.

Move the valve all the way in one direction and wire it there. Start the truck and drive it. When you accelerate and load the engine you will know by how it performs wether it is wired open or closed. If you experience a lack of power you will know you wired it shut the first time, reverse it to correct the problem. Wiring it open on a daily driver is a temporary fix as far as I am concerned if you live where it gets cold. JMHO
