no the blocks are not the same size. the bell housing on a 440 or Big block is different than the bell housing on on a 5.9 or small block. a 440 will fit if you get a big block transmission and it has the right oil pan and pickup. there are websites that sell the parts you would need to do the conversion.

As has already been said either will fit in your truck with the right trans, oil pan and exhaust maniflds or headers. These parts are usually at a premium and often not "available" because the people you are talking to about them don't really know what they are talking about. There is an easy way to know whether it is a big or small block is Big Block = front distributor, Small lock = rear distributor. I had two trucks with big blocks and loved them both. As you said originally "there is no substitute for cubic inches". Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.
