what hose do you need to replace? i am not sure about the 88 and newer vehicles but on the carbed trucks the return line was a size smaller than the fuel supply line.

It is the hose or part of a hose is rubber. It is the hose going into the tank where you put gas in(nozzle) where the door is

The hose in question is the filler hose. The inside diameter ( ID) is 1.75". I've been to the dealer and no luck there but there are a bunch in the boneyard for next to nothing. For myself, I went to AC Delco and they replaced it with AC Delco straight coolant hose #31009. Probably won't last as long but who knows. I've seen them on Rockauto in shorter lengths for less than $10 but I went to AC Delco and it was way pricier at $40 but I did both vehicles with some to spare for a third.

Does it matter how much gas is in the tank

should not make a difference. you don't need to drop the tank to replace that rubber hose.

Yep, it just connects the metal filler tube attached to the gas cap to the gas tank metal filler tube. If you're worried just make sure it isn't full. Maybe 3/4 tank is more than low enough. Just don't drop the tube into the tank. LOL
