Default Axle swap ?!

1996 ram 1500 4x4 318.

Front axle d44 (gearing 4.11)
Rear axle Chrysler 9.25 (gearing 3.55)

Dumb I know (wasn't my doing was like that when I bought it.

Been struggling to find 4.11 gearing for rear axle (without spending $$ and shipping from somewhere)

Thought I could just swap in a different axle where parts are easier to get. Which leads me to my next question !

What axle do I swap in (easiest most cost effective, and will most likely be geared at 4.11)

4.11/4.10 was a factory option, and was stock in the 00-01 Off Road Edition trucks. Finding an axle that actually has them though... That's an entirely different story. Talk about rare........ Makes hens teeth look downright common.

The most cost effective will be simply changing your gears. Yeah, not precisely cheap, but, the axle that is already under the truck, has the right sensor, yoke, etc..... Adapting something else that didn't originally come underneath a dodge will be interesting.

Could go with a D60, you might find one of those with 4.11's..... but, they were universally eight lug on the dodge trucks......

You could prolly find gears for a couple hundred. (USA gears are generally less expensive, and are still quiet when set up properly....) If the rest of the stuff in the diff is still in good shape, just re-use it.

best bet buy 4.10 ring and pinion and have someone put it in . as for '85 D150 should have 8.25 or 9.25 rear . could be either .

either is fine . 9.25 is stronger but not needed unless you have a ton of power or drag race etc . Enjoy your truck !

Blacky's shows used 4.10s for the 9.25". www.car-part.com.

I did an 8.25" ring and pinion last year (same design). I recommend the following for setup:
- carrier bearing adjuster tool (or build one)
- crush sleeve eliminator
- a way to press and pull pinion bearings
- good gear marking compound
- slide-hammer with attachments to pull axle bearings
- dial indicator

Also, 8-lug axle swaps on those trucks are cake with a little lift to compensate for the increased pinion length. I did the front on my '96 1500 before selling it.
