Default 440-1 motorhome engine in place of 360 maybe

my friend the Mopar Nut offered me a 73 440-1 engine with rear sump oil pan and regular water pump/accessory brackets with the matching TF727 that has 32K miles for either $500 or all my LA engines/trans and aftermarket parts for them.
Seeing I need a new engine for the dt again are the motorhome engines more durable than the LA?
Would there be any advantage with the 440-1 vs a warned up 5.9 Magnum?
thanks Everyone!

it came from his brothers 1972 motorhome, I think it was a Champion? The body is long gone but the chassis looks like a 2wd dodge D300 frame with forward controls

have you checked that the trans has a slip yoke? most motor homes have the slip in the shaft adjustment in the drive shaft and not the trans. might need a different trans or different tail shaft for the transmission.

The motorhome trans has the same bolt on yolk 727 that my DT has so it SHOULD work from a trans point of view but if it is different length or something I would be tempted to swap converters and run the RB or B to LA trans adapter as the DT’s 727 is very Good

i guess as long as the yoke is the same it should be a straight swap but i don't think i have seen a truck come with a bolt on yoke from the factory. usually they just have the slip yoke going into the trans

I think all the odd stuff on this thing has a lot to do with where it was ordered and built by/from. We found out it has diesel front ball joints and suspension even though it was always a gas truck from day one. It has a Dana 80 rear axle, hydro boost brakes, a vey, very thick frame and heavy springs and overloads and when the rear spring hangers rusted beyond repair we had to use D350 pickup truck hangers and make new overload brackets as the pickup hangers dropped the back 2.5 inches.
I know the 440 fits but is it worth all the effort vs a magnum 5.9 with a carb and headers plus the nice ignition system which I already have

being a 350 it would likely be just as heavy build as it would for a diesel. i don't think hydro boost was ever a factory option on a dodge truck. that is most likely a conversion someone did along the way. it is common for people to do the swap when they are trying to get brakes to work better. most likely chevy parts adapted to work like most people do.

as far as engines go if you truely have a 5.9 magnum like what is uses on the 93 and newer trucks/vans and not the 5.9la like what is use in the 92 and older vehicles then i would try fixing it or replacing it. a 5.9 magnum will create about the same amount of power as the 440 as is. the change in the heads on the magnum engines improved power output pretty good

5.9L magnum 230 hp
440 4-bb 275 hp
The 440 has a lot of potential if you build it up a little.
run the RB or B to LA trans adapter as the DT’s 727 is very Good
The 727B is a bigger trans to handle the added hp of big blocks. Stepping down to a 727A(small block trans) doesn't make much scene.

That depends what you use the truck for and personal preference.

is that what the ones used in motor homes were actually rated for or is that what the ones the put in cars were rated for. yes you can get more power out of a 440 for cheaper than a small block especially a magnum engine but it is not like you are sticking it in a hot rod. you really don't need that much engine in a truck like that. big block almost don't belong in daily drivers or work vehicle.
