Default Engine coming out, time to de-smog but ??

OK, decided to pull the engine out to replace the leaking expansion plugs so this is a good opportunity to remove all the excess baggage in the form of smog pump etc. But, wondering what should stay and what should go.

Don't need any of the emission controls as truck will be on historic rego and emission controls are not required over here.

Obviously the first thing to chuck over my shoulder will be the smog pump but can I get some pointers on what else to rip out.

Thanks in advance

Ric

Oh, and on another unrelated topic just finished making a new ID label for the inside of the door frame. Nothing worse than seeing an old label poorly masked up and spray painted over so made my own

I'd pull the insides of the smog pump and catalytic converter (if you have one) and leave them in place. That way, if MOT ever wants to get snotty about original equipment, it'll look stock. Also, when you pull the engine and remove the expansion plugs, put the engine in an engine stand and flush it with a garden hose while at a slight angle to the side. you'd be surprised how much garbage will come out. Both rust and sand from when the block was cast. This would also be a good time to replace the timing chain and the oil pump. Replace it with a high VOLUME pump. NOT a high pressure pump. A high volume will compensate for worn bearings inside and you'll get a lot of miles out of an otherwise untouched engine. A high pressure pump will blow the bearings out and shorten the life of the engine. Look around on your fender well and see if there is an emissions label that says "Non-catalyst". If it's there, you don't have a catalytic converter. If you have a D150 rather than a D100, you may not have the converter.

pcv, brake booster and vacuum advance are the only thing you really need hooked up. you can yank the rest and block off any holes.

Thanks guys, good tips there. I am considering my option on engine rebuild once it comes out. Just don't know how far I should go. I did buy this truck with the intention of just hopping in and driving it. Not wanting to start another project such as my 80 Camaro thats been sitting on blocks since 2005.
But then I think while I have the engine out what better time to replace the worn internals. Def needs new timing chain and gears. I have a receipt from the previous owner where a new oil pump has been fitted but I get the feeling it is low on oil pressure going by the gauge at idle so maybe new main bearings are in order.

But then the list blows out, new flat top pistons, new mild camshaft, 318 heads are pretty basic so maybe some swirl port "302" casting heads would be good. Where will it end.

Would also like to get the body into better shape with a new coat of paint, you see where tis is heading. Anyway, always nice to get feedback and appreciate all those who have commented so far.

Cheers

I don't know about how the MOT in Oz is about changing engines, but why not go with a big block? The frame should be the same so it's a drop in except for the transmission. Find an engine/transmission from an older truck and freshen it up. They were an option until 1978. Heavy trucks and RV's used them a little later than that. U.S. emissions were the reason they were dropped.

How did you do this and what did you use?

I have a Roland wide format printer. I run a small business from home supplying decals to suit Honda ATC models. The printer comes in handy for odd jobs like this.
What I did was snapped a pic of the existing decal on my phone. Imported into my drawing program and proceeded to hand draw all the elements of the decal.

What I usually like to do is get hold of a NOS decal, scan it and then draw it from there but there was no option for this one.

I took several measurements of the existing decal, both overall size, info box size and text size, and then sat down and created what you see. It took a few hours to draw up so its not something I would do as a one off job but happy to make one for myself.

Here is a pic of the printer with various decals printed and ready to be cut out.

I could have some fun with something like that. Probably get myself in trouble too.

Isn't that half the fun though?
