1985 D-150 v6 conversion
Hi all, My mane is Todd. it's nice to be a new member of this forum.
What I am up to is. I have my late father's 85 D-150 FWD pickup. I want to replace the 318 with a late model pentastar V6. Will I need an adapter plate to connect the A-727 transmission?
Thank you in advance
Todd.

I found this thread comparing the Pentastar pattern to the older V8.

What about getting the V6 with its native transmission attached? or a 6speed manual?
A more popular route may be the Magnum 5.2L and matching overdrive transmission. Probably 92-00 vintage.

your kidding right? the penstar v6 has about the same power specs as a 318 magnum so it would likely be better than the la 318 that he already has.
personally i would vote for a 318 or 360 magnum for the sake of simplicity. as much as i would like to recommend getting a 46rh with it being a 4x4 it would almost be cheaper to just buy another truck than get all the parts needed especially since you would need to change gear ratio in the axles to actually use overdrive.

My '90 truck with OD and the axles was $500. Also snagged a '96 with a magnum for $300. A buddy gave me a 46rh w/tcase this past week. Possibilities open up when the price is right.

problem is he needs more than just the transmission and transfer case. he would also need new drive shafts and different gear ratio to actually use overdrive unless he plans on cruising at about 75-80mph. 3.23 gears like he likely has in his don't work well with overdrive. 3.55 or 4.10 gears work best and you would be looking at at about $1000/axle to do gear change. this is why it would be cheaper to just buy a complete truck. finding cheap trucks is nearly impossible these days. with what these weigh they are likely worth at least $600 scrap weight plus whatever you can get for the cat. sold 2 cats recently for $300 each so finding a truck under $1k would be tricky.

Donor trucks come with extra everything. I've always been able swap diffs cheaper than re-gearing. Maybe I see things different as I worked in autowrecking and vehicle rebuilding when I was younger.
Aggressive scrapping/recycling is a city thing. Outlying areas, and islands... often not viable... transportation costs kill it.
