Default 4WD question

On an 83 W150 with locking hubs does the drive shaft going from the transfer case to the front differential turn when the shifter is in 2WD?

It isn't powered, but, it may still turn. If your hubs are still locked in, yes, it will turn, but, it is being powered by the front wheels, instead of powering them. If the hubs are unlocked, then it may or may not turn. Just depends on how much friction in the t-case.

I feel mine is turning but need to check closer. Just noticed it yesterday. If it's turning due to friction then isn't it robbing a bit of power and reducing gas mileage?

If the t-case is in 2wd, and the hubs are unlocked, that is as good as it's gonna get.

Check and check. I guess it’s as good as it’s going to get.

My '84 W150 had the lock outs and the front driveshaft would sometimes free wheel. Usually cold weather when the grease and oil was stiff. I got about 18 mpg but it had 3.21 gears. The more usual gearing gets around 12-15 mpg.

@ol' grouch What would more usual gearing be? Mine seems to be 3.55.

The '96 Ram 1500 I have now and most of the first gens I've had were the 3.55. It's a good all around gearing set. My 3.21 was a stinker to find differentials for. My front never gave any trouble so I had to stay with the 3.21 in back. Your front gearing has to be slightly taller. So your 3.55 rear will have a 3.54 front differential set.
