Default overfilled oil?

so when i was changing my oil in my dakota today i accidentley overfilled it about 3/4 of an inch over the full line. I had someone tell me that it would be fine but i wanted to check with you guys about it. and if it's going to be a problem how can i drain some of it out without rechanging allmy oil. thanks

did you check the oil with the engine on, or immediately after shutting it off??? if you answered no to both of these questions then try to check it w/ the engine running and see if its fine bc when it is not running the oil drains out of the engine into the oil pan and raised the level a little bit

btw - make sure that you are on a leve surface when you are doing this

You should be fine as long its not 2 to 3 qts over filled, Then you would have smoke coming out the tail pipe.

just loosen the drain plug enough for oil to start running out for a while, then tighten it back up. let the motor run for a few minutes and make sure you're on a level surface before you check it. a little bit over the safe mark wont hurt, but i'd say 3/4 of an inch over the safe might be a bit too much..

you should be fine a little over won't hurt. Unlike a girl I know put bars stop leak in the motor to stop a rear main oil seal leaak. Needless to say the motor locked up

I'd say drain it down a bit by loosening the drain plug and letting some dribble out for awhile. 3/4 of an inch is quite a bit over full and if nothing else will hurt your gas mileage for the next 3,000 miles. How many quarts did you put in it?

If it is overfilled and you drive it for a bit you could be wrecking stuff. Blowing piston rings, who knows what else, but it would cause higher pressure.

edit: Thought I would add this, I talked to someone and they told me someone overfilled their dirtbike with oil and it started like coming into the oil filter and dripped all over the top, Engine was gone after this.

ok just a few things.
1.)A little over full is ok, 3/4 of an inch is a little extreme.
2.) Too much is JUST AS BAD as not enough
3.) Never check the oil with the vehicle running, it is impossible to get an accurate reading
4.) And like everyone said be sure your on a fairly flat surface.

Just a tip, it may be easier to control how much oil comes out by just removing the filter, and draining the oil thats in there. It may take 2 or 3 times at doing this but that way you don't lose too much. Also if you check the oil level after removing AND replacing the filter, be sure to start up the truck to make sure that the oil circulates and you get a proper reading on the dipstick. just my .02
