I'm not sure about the V6 Dakotas, but all V8 Daks and Durangos came with a clutch fan and an electric fan, and most of the time they will run hot if only one fan works. If you are planning to remove the clutch fan and shroud, you will have to come up with a way to run your coolant overflow and washer fluid bottles because they are made into the shroud

When did they start putting both electric and mechanical fans in the V-8 Dakotas? My '97 has only a mechanical fan. In '97, the 4-cylinder had an electric fan only, and the V-6 and V-8 trucks had a mechanical fan only.

yes, your truck does have an electric fan. i don't know why the other guy thinks you'll be removing your shroud. hell, you don't even have to remove your shroud to get the clutch fan off, but it does make it easier. your truck shouldn't go past 220 with the stock electric fan. the only time you'll even see it heat up is if your stuck in trafic and its blazing hot out. so to answer your question about your the fan you bought, yes, it'll be enough. i removed mine and noticed a difference in throttle response. there is a bit more of snap when it revs. good luck. put some pics up after you install your fan.

The dual fan setup started later in the body style I suppose. The only ones I have worked on at the dealership had both, but I stand corrected.

Well in the vehicles that have both fans, the electric fan turns on when the A/C turns on, or at high coolant tempsto assist in cooling.

Whoever said these trucks overheat without one or the other fan is wrong.

It takes alot for the motors to overheat i live in texas and the summers can get pretty bad.. aslong as you have a good flowing water pump, 180 thermostat and a stock electric fan it stays PLENTY cool... even in traffic..

I unistalled my shroud and Clutch fan and im running my Stock Electric fan right now (see pic)

I have a 180 thermo, Custom Made Overflow bottle (made from PVC) and one stock electric fan.. and mine never get close to 210.. not even 195.. the 180 really helps in cooling the engine.. Plus to if you do alot of highway driving.. doesnt really matter if you have a clutch fan or not, as for me i live in Fort Worth/Dallas... Traffic is horrible.. never once been over the 200+ in temp.

All I can say is that I have seen Daks and Durangos in the dealership before with an overheating problem due to a faulty electric fan.

We had a '96 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L, and removed the mechanical fan (the only fan on it) and replaced it with a 1600-CFM electric fan (unsure of the brand). It would not properly cool the Jeep, and you just plain couldn't tow with it. Even without towing, in warmer weather with the A/C on, the temperatures would climb to the warm side of "normal" on the gauge and stay there. It was clear to us that the stock mechanical fan has much more capacity than the electric fans do. Considering that ours was a 1600-CFM unit, I'd be leery of a 1200-CFM fan.
