What happens when the flame travels back up the exhaust? Or can it not?

have to be running rich as heck to do that..the unburnable hydrocarbons in the exhaust, and the expuslion speed of the exhaust, prevent any flareback.

So the hydrocarbons have to be released into the air before the rest of it can burn?

this is just going off my theories (not too great). But burned fuel cannot be burned again. And since the fuel from the injector can not physically go against the flow of the exhaust, it can only throw the flame in the flow of the exhaust. Plus the plug is usually 6" downpipe of the injector.
