Default Upper ball joints

I was reading my Haynes manual today as I need to replace my ball joints and it says you cannot replace the upper ones and that the whole control arm needs to be replaced? Is that really the case? The haynes manual really is not that good and doesn't really explain things well.

thats cause they were rivited on, you should of been covered in the recaall, where chrysler had instructed the tech to drill/grind off the rivits and included new upper ball joints with bolts. id torque those bolts down to 40 ft lbs when i did mine, and then that castle nut between the upper BJ and spindle was 60 ft lbs and the lower BJ was 135..

They (Chrysler) seems to have a habit of this.
On my Gen 1, the upper ball joints are threaded into the control arm. These, according to the service manual (1996, not yours) are replaceable.
The bottom ones are pressed into the control arm. The service manual says if the lower ball joints are bad "replace the lower control arm."

cut them out and the new ones will come with bolts

fox, the recall was about the balljoints themselves failing, most dealerships saved time by replacing the upper control arm, mine was done under the recall and they were still riveted in

Did you see what it cost to get the new control arms with the balljoint on already? If its close to the price of the balljoint, just replace the arms, its faster, and easier.

Napa didn't have the control arms for sale online. I was just checking to see how much the ball joints were. $75 a piece...
