Default Engine rebuild question

Ok so I have determined that I need to do my plenum gasket. I found a DIY on this site so I think I can handle that.

Now my question is what else should I do while Im doing the plenum gasket? Im in there and things are apart. Im thinking of timing chain/belt and maybe water pump. What am I missing?

He is the link to the DIY so you can see what is involved.

It depends on the time and money you got. The timing chain is a lot more involved. I would say stick with simple stuff. Thermostat, plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotor, coolant/heater hoses that feel soft, oil change.

Timing chain shouldn't need to be replaced. If it were a belt i'd say yeah you should.

Well I was thinking PM and things that would be a PITA to do otherwise and would be made easier with things apart. I already have done the plugs, wires ect so I guess Ill just do the plenum gasket and see what happens lol

Thanks for the advice on the timing chain. Even at 133k mi it should still be good?

Timing Chain is no fun at all. I can say that much. I did mine on the v6. I am going to be doing this soon however the local hughes supplier just sold their last one for a week so I have to wait, engine was 2 quarts LOW! couldn't believe it. Thermostat, intake gasket, maybe do the port and polish on the intake cut the runners ect.. if you want. Oil Change is a must, and I would change the plugs too. If it's leaking oil into the intake your plugs are probably slightly fouled.

Called a Kegger Mod, you cut out the middle divider piece, and the runners down to get it less restrictive.

Yes you will need to do an oil change the coolant will probably end up in the oil.
