Thumbs down killed the 42RE...

was driving home from school today, got gas, came to a stop to turn right back into traffic, and lost all drive, forward and back (it stayed in neutral when i went to pull out). If I let it just sit and idle in reverse, it eventually grabbed (and I used reverse to get out of the way, and it was bucking real bad just goign 20 feet backwards to unblock the driveway). Called dad, who called a tow truck, and we had it towed to a trans shop. They said it sounds like the governor pressure sensor, to fail all of a sudden without noise. They should have a diagnosis by noon tomorrow.

The shift handle could have been anywhere and it would just act like it was in neutral.

On a related note, it was making a wierd noise this morning:

It kinda sounded like supercharger whine. But it happened in R, N, D, 2, and 1st, but not in park. Which I thought was odd, because I thought park was just neutral with a peg jammed in a clock ring?Because it made the noise in neutral but not park.

Trans shop called. Moves when cold, but loses pressure as it warms up. Said I either lost the convertor or front pump or both. It was 1.5 quarts past full (we never added fluid) and pan was full of metal.

Wow Dodge did a outstanding job designing this transmission.

That sucks man, looks like you're going to need a new tranny. I had a rebuilt one put in my old dakota, cost $1200. Which is expensive but not that expensive for a transmission.

I did some cross referencing- The 42/44RE is an electronic A500 (overdrive 904TF), and the 46RE is an electronic A518 (overdrive 727TF).

Mine's at 116K miles.

Our Hemi is at 192K this week (2005) and It's just starting to leak at the freeze plugs... We've had it's trans done twice I think and after we get a few more things done in the garage, we're gonna put new brakes on all 4 corners, the factory ones are about gone.

dad justcalled. He went to the shop as they dropped the pan. Full of metal and parts. It had been previously serviced, the front drive clutches were backward, which is what caused all the problems. Drums are gone. Front pump and convertor are both shattered internally. Fluid was fine other than overfilled- was still red. $2450 for a full rebuild.

Please tell me you're not paying $2450 for a full rebuild...

I had a rebuilt 42re put in my dakota (identical truck to yours) for $1200. $2450 is crazy. I think we can all do the math on that one.

but yours was a shelf rebuild, correct? He doesn't order shelf rebuilds unless the casing is trashed.

This guy is using the same case, taking everything out, and replacing everything between the flywheel and driveshaft.... the planetary gears are the only thing that are re-usable, and he's having them blacklighted for cracks and impurities.

I'm heading up there in a few..dad told them to put everything they take out in a bucket so we can look at it.

He charges a base $1500 for a rebuild, then parts beyond that go to $2450. The convertor, front pump, clutches/drums/bands, filter, fluid, 4 days of storage, and a tow.
