I have a 2004 4wd with the 4.7. My truck did not come with a user manual. I looked under the hood for the gear ratio but there aren't any stickers under it. Also when I was in auto zone pricing fluid that truck has a 9 1/4 and 8 3/4 rear end??? Or something like that... how do I tell what size rear end and gear ratio I have? My next question is I have 5 spd trans what kind of fluid do I change it with and how do I do it? I know that automatics are the only ones that have fluid but dont manuals need gear oil or something?

 

Look in your glove box for rear end info. I have an automatic, sorry don't know what fluid you need.

 

Check your dipstick, I would think it would tell what you need on it.

 

if your diff cover is round, u have the 8.25, if its more like a stop sign its the 9.25, its most likely the 9.25 with 3.55 gears but check ur glove box like above for the the gear ratios

 

The NV3500 has a drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug on the side. It's not hard to do. It does not use gear oil it takes a special oil. You're best off getting it at the dealer, the NV3500 seems to have issues with other oils.

The FSM says: Required lubricant for the NV3500 is Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant, P/N 4874464. This is the only lubricant to be used in NV3500 transmissions. No other lubricants are acceptable, or recommended.

You should find a tag on the differential cases with the ratios.

 

thanks guys. and do you know of anywhere that i can get the trans lube? like online or something? i hate paying such rediculous prices from the dealers....

 

you are pretty much going to pay a pretty penny for mopar atf+4. do some google searches and see if you can get it cheaper.

 

It's not ATF+4, it's special for the NV3500.

I'd stick with the Mopar fluid as you know what you've got. GM also has an NV3500 fluid of their own, you could check prices. I know it is pricey but so is the transmission. It's not like you'll need to change it often anyways.

I run royal purple. Have since umm...maybe 20K? no issues. Smooth shifts and solid. I think its Synchro-Max that I use. Then Max Gear in the front and rear diffs.

if you have the 3.55 gears, say, 2000rpm around 60-65, you have a 9.25. Like Josh said...

my 2cents, no need for dealer ish. With a little digging you could prob find Mopar fluid is made by "_____", and you can prob get that for 30% cheaper. (note, I dont know who makes it, or care cause Ive had no issues with Royal Purple.) Also, People run Lucas fine, or im sure reg ATF+4. I believe the manual says something funny like, only use mopar filters and a mopar approved oil...its all similar. I wouldnt give my dealer the pride of the business for a simple fluid. Also, its out of warranty, so who the ell cares! lol...

 

also, there is a tag conveniently located under your carpet and passenger seat( i think) that has your build codes on it...if you cant make a positive decision, not that it will be hard to figure out or differentiate.
