problems with stalling
Matter of fact mines at a 1/4 tank.I was going to put gas that morning but had so much trouble with it.I figured I better not put gas in it if I'm going to drop the tank.My truck has 194k on it so Im thinking they never have replaced the fuel pump.I also have a 2004 Dakota and its been great that's why i bought another one.Hopefully a new pump will fix this problem.
I have a 2002 Dakota with the 4.7 V8 and about 240,000 miles. It's having the same problem described here. It starts fine but will stall when I stop at a light. If I drop it into neutral while stopped, it idles enough to keep from stalling. This problem just started after getting the truck back from the garage to have the transmission filter changed. (Wanted a pressure flush, that's for a different topic.) I'm on my way out to check the tranny fluid level based on some replies here.
My question is whether I can tell if I have the California emissions variety exhaust by some identifier. I'd like to order a set of O2 sensors today because they've never been changed. I may do the IAC just for the same reason.
Thanks in advance,
Tom
FYI. I don't know if it's throwing a code. The check engine light has been on since I bought the truck new and two dealers couldn't figure out why. That's likely for another topic too.

I've been thinking its the fuel pump but not really sure.I've been on the Internet and apparently this has happen to alot of people. So far no one can pinpoint the exact problem.Everything from Iac,PCM.Abs sensor you name it and it has been replaced and still the problem persist.I went and played with my 98 for awhile and it would not start.I jiggled one of the connections at the pcm and it started. So I am waiting to see if someone runs in to a solution.till then I keep driving and jiggley things LOL!
It was the lack of transmission fluid that was causing my problem. When I got the truck back from the garage that changed the filter, I checked the fluid level. It showed on the stick to be fine. The garage said they put in 7 quarts. I was expecting 4 to 6 based on what I read. They also said they tried to power (pressure?) flush the fluid but could not, maybe because of a check valve. But they tried, and that may be a clue.
Is it possible the stick is showing how much is in the pan, and that with some driving the levels can fluctuate as fluid moves through the tranny? When I checked last night, the stick showed the fluid level to be full while warm. The truck was parked level. I cycled through the gears while holding my foot on the brake. The stick still showed full. I added 2 quarts while the truck was running, and the level still showed full while warm (no apparent change). After adding the extra fluid, the truck ran fine - no stalling and much smoother shifting during the test drive. Another question - Can too much fluid be a problem? Will it be expelled on the driveway making me think I have a leak?
I want to thank everyone that posts their experiences here in the forum. This is the 2nd or 3rd time I've gotten good advice that has saved a tidy sum.

I'm going over to that thread where the guy is messing with the Hemi. I want to put one in my jon boat.

It could be the torque converter on the transmisson. Just had mine in the shop they rebuilt the tranny and had to put a new water pump on also. Just got mine back today after 2 weeks. On the way home with my kids mine started to over heat and it had plenty of antifreeze in it. What could make it
over heat ? it has a new water pump and thermastat in it......

Well i have an update to my problem.I notice if i wiggled the plug on the pmc closest to the firewall it would die out.I took the the computer off and sprayed cleaned all the connections[use a cleaner that won't melt plastic].i then pluged the wires backup and put a tiedown on the one i wiggled.I have now drove my truck for150 mile and 5 days with it not dying on me.Im keeping my fingers crossed but this is the most I've been able to drive my truck.
