see i thought about doing that when it was acting up before, but then it stopped clicking for about 3 months and now doing it even worse, but i read this one thread that had a huge debate on it and i couldnt get a clear answer either way. here is the link for the thread....http://www.dakota-durango.com/forum/...ad.php?t=99729

if somebody could give me a 100% educated answer or from personal experience that would be great, i dont want any of the "o ya it SHOULD work" answers if you know what im saying

Anyone who says it doesn't work is an idiot that doesn't understand how AWD or t-cases work. Putting the t-case in 4hi and removing the driveshaft will not hurt anything. It is explained in that thread multiple times over (a couple of posts are mine too) why it won't hurt anything.

i read that thread again, i need to remove my front shaft as well. i understand how it works and i was gunna do it before i read the tread. but my selector only has 3 options. AWD-4HI-4LO. i dont have this 4HI-loc that is talked about in that thread. i am asuming that my 4hi is the same thing. my tcase neutral is done with a ball point pen, not with the switch. so, my question is... will my 4hi setting lock my center diff and operate just like a 2wd.

im sorry, i guess i hijacked this thread. update: i pulled my shaft out and holy crap, i can damn near pull the drive ***** out of the cv joint with my fingers! i talked to my trans tech at a dealer i do alot of work for(he is also a good friend) and he said that cause i have the 244 tcase and not the 249, i should be able to drive it the 68 miles to work on monday with out damage. the 249 he said would self destruct within a few miles. he also said he would not bet on it lasting long w/o a shaft in place, but... he also would like to see if it does last over time.(at my expence. as he laughs). ill keep you folks posted.

from what I remember, some cases use the front DS as a seal (just like a pinion), while others use a sealed bearing instead.

Yes!

If you have AWD, do not drive without a front driveshaft unless the t-case is in 4hi.

thanks moparman, $125 for just the cv joint itself, that beats my local parts stores. 350 my wholesale cost for a new complete shaft from my dealer. wowsers! i took it for a drive and i thought i would try it, I acually did a brake stand!!! for the first time im 10 years and 217000 miles, i spun my tires on dry pavement. woo hoo. i can get used to this 2wd thing.haha.
and yes im in 4HI.

update: got a new shaft from napa. $287.00 and that came with a u-joint instead of a cv joint. its supposed to be stronger and such. put the new shaft in and took it out of 4HI, so i thought. it was stuck in 4HI. i did what i could to get it out...... forward, backward... forward backward and so on until BOOM! scared the crap out of me! i dont know what it was but it is now out of 4wd. but......... now i have a NASTY vibration, at all speeds. and its very fast. meaning its not a out of balance tire. i can feel it at 5mph all the way up yo 60+mph. so is it the new shaft out of balance or is my tcase all effed up now? any thoughts?
