Default random speedometer issue

Hello all,

My 98 dakota's speedometer does not work most of the time except for about once every two weeks randomly, for one drive. The dakota is a 5.2L 4x4 with Ram tires. I have replaced both speed sensors. After installing the new sensors the check engine light returned with the VSS code again. Anyone have any suggestions for it?

Thanks

Is your ABS light on? Did you replace the ABS/speed sensor over the rear diff?

I have changed the abs/speed sensor on the rear diff and no luck. I believe the abs light is on, the guy who had the truck before me screwed with a lot and it has no lightbulb for the abs.

Ok..to throw a twist on things...my speedometer seems to only work when it is raining or has rained. Thinking it could be a bad connection somewhere.

Default how funny

how funny only works in the rain some of these odd problems are just in the twilight Zone

I think you may have an answer it may be up under the dash the dash plug I believe there is two wire harnesses that plug into the back of the instrument panel maybe reach up under and wiggle each connector and see if the problem goes away.Or try pushing in on the instrument panel and see if that works

It may be the humidity in the cab making it work when it rains

There is a seal on the connector to the sensor on the differential. Make sure it is in place and not damaged. Some dielectric grease may be a good idea too.
