Default Headliner Problems

Hey guys...

I've got a saggin' headliner in my 2003 dakota and I will need to get it fixed. I am also planning on buying an RB1 Navigation unit and installing a GPS antenna on the roof, so I figure while I have it out, I can cut the holes in the roof and run the wires.

I guess my question is what is the prefered method. I don't have a lot of time, so keep that in mind. Is there any OEM NOS lying around? If so, where can I order it from?

I was reading the topic about the DIY fix. Could an upholstery shop do that for me at a much lower cost?

All input is appreciated...

Default shop will do the headliner

Shop will do the headliner about $120 DIY $55 DIY is annoying but not that hard just PITA.

Just DIY my own headliner scrubbing the old foam off sucks wire brush worked best for me one day if you are motivated car still smells like glue day or two and smell will be gone.

Don’t know about the antenna maybe just a window mount?

Holes in a roof not sure I would do that.

Hmmm... Okay. I'll ask around at some shops. I really don't have the time, at the moment, or I'd give it a shot.

What about a new one? Is it a whole lot more money?

I'm not really happy about that prospect either. I'm asuming they would have come OEM from the factory like that, though; if you had GPS installed originally. I don't know how else you would be able to get the signal from the GPS antena to the head unit...

My 2003 Headliner did the same, so I just found a
local upholstery shop, ( a guy runs out of his garage) took it over to him, he quoted $150 foo the headliner, and I also had him fix a seat.

All in all not to expensive for the job, and it looks great.

Mine's almost completely sagging down now, and it's winter. I didn't feel like dealing with it now when it's 20 or 30 degrees out, so I just shot a few staples into it and it'll be fine til spring or summer. Just be careful if you do this and shoot the staples at an angle so the staples don't make dents in the top of the cab.

Default best is to not touch it

best is to not touch it unless it’s in the way of driving just cut out the sagging areas to remove it staples and glue are a bad choice.

I talked to a shop about fixing my headliner and he told me of many stupid people fixing them with glue staples so on and he said DONT DO THAT it makes fixing it way harder for them to do a good job when people do those quick fixes kind of trashes the headliner.

He said gluing is the worst thing to do as a quick fix

most gps units come with a sensor that does not need to be mounted outside the cab. I installed a Kenwood GPS touch screen in my Ram 1500 and I hid the sensor under the dash. Still worked perfectly.

That's why I liked my old 81' Ford; it came with a painted metal roof and look good as-is.. plus it had enough room to screw into for CB mounting.

Well 2 staples aren't going to kill it. I was just sick of having it drag on my head. Speaking of CB, while the headliner's out I might try to make a mount for it under the headliner right in the front-middle of the roof where the info center is. Except I don't have the overhead console thing since it's an sxt.
