You know the mid 90's Ford's had their air intake tube go to an inlet right between the hood and the crossmember there. It was not direct; but I'm sure enough air was pushed in it between the hood but we are also talking about trucks that did not have Product line defect in their intake manifolds either.
But they seemed to work ok. But being these trucks have a Map sensor instead of a MAF sensor I guess the validity of the concern if the MAP is going to be able to keep up or not and adjust quick enough. ? IDK..

Here is the one I just bought. $33 including shipping.

I will see what happens with it, if nothing, not much money lost.

Fellows I suggest a trip to Lowes for some 3 inch PVC pipe. Leave an inch of the flared end on it. This keeps it from slipping out of the air box. Paint it with some black textured paint if you're into looks. Run the other end up and cut a hole in the tar-paper shield next to the radiator. No part you can buy is going to bring in cooler air than that. The ram didn't affect mine negatively in the least when it was a gas engine. Not using the stock air box on the diesel so I'm going to have to experiment a little feeding the turbo from different locations.
This is literally a $10 modification. Or spend big bucks. Your choice.
Now I understand some people like to have a show truck when they open the hood and this isn't going to qualify. To each their own. Sounded nice on mine and that's more important than looks in my mind... On my Honda I've wrapped the intake in some of the metallic bubble wrap insulation - looks nice, but probably doesn't do much to keep the air temp down.

Here are the picks

I think I might go with a longer tube eventually to pull it away from the engine, but it did open up that side of the engine compartment
