Oh yeah I noticed here you're supposed to replace the axle nut?

Why is that - I can understand the pin but why the whole nut?

The nut is designed to "lock." Once it's been used you replace.

i just looked at the 2000 durango FSM for the hub replacement and it only says to replace the axle nut on the 2WD models. Under the 4WD section it just says to tighten to 173 foot pounds. here is the link to the 2000 durango FSM i was looking at http://www.dakota-durango.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150888
the hub replacement section is under the suspension section

The procedure is different for a 2 versus 4 wheel drive and different torques. Trent asked about an '01 Dakota 2wd. 185 foot pounds is straight from the manual for a 2wd version.

173 foot pounds is correct if you have 4wd.

I don't have a 2002 manual. In the 2001 manual for the 4x4 it says nothing about replacing the nut.

On the 4x4 the axle shaft is splined into the hub, all the nut does is hold everything tight. There is NO rotational force exerted on the nut. There is a cotter pin too.

In the 4x2 the spindle doesn't rotate at all. Big difference. The nut has to not only hold the hub on but not rotate and change the preload on the bearing. You need it to lock in place.

You can certainly replace the nut if you want but it does not appear to be required by Dodge.

from my knowledge you dont have to replace the nut on 4x4's. which to me seems strange because i dont see the diffrence. i will be replacing the nut on mine as it is a 2wd.
