Lift kits
Hey guys, Last saturday I went out with a few of my closest buddies, one of whom I was supposed to go to Marine Corps Boot Camp with today, but the marines messed up my paperwork, were off roading. I had alot of trouble bottoming out while out on the power line trails. The mud ruts of the trail were so bad at one point that my tires weren't even touching the mud anymore, becasue my suspension was stuck on the grass inbetween the tires, long story... I have a 2004 SLT Quadcab 4x4 with an automatic transmission. I am fairly new to the DIY side of the auto world, and I have heard there are two types of kits, suspension and body kits. My question is, what is the best kind of kit for preventing bottoming out, and what is the most affordable. I am banking on purchasing this kit while in the Marines, on an E2 pay grade. I do not neccissarily need the best of the best, but I definetly need to prevent the issue of bottoming out. All help will be very very apprechiated!

My understanding with the Dakota you only have 2 options. Body lift or blocks. Blocks would be the cheapest. You can get them at any parts store. Will come in either 1 1/2 or 2 or 3 inches and will come with new u- bolts. Than just crank your torsion bars for the front. The body lift will be 3 inches and you can get it at different places and is a made by Performance accessories. Got mine from Summit Racing. Kit comes complete with everything you need. With some help and a good day you can install it.
On a different note good luck in boot camp.

And bigger tires will get you more ground clearance. Suspension lifts don't really gain you ground clearance by themselves, either, because the axles are still at the same height. They gain clearance by allowing you to run bigger tires.

Body lifts are more for looks than anything. You may want to try get blocks first see that does you want. These I saw on Ebay. Just to give you a idea.
