ABS/Brake Light - Module Replacement Cost?
My ABS/Brake light came on about a year ago. Local mechanic scanned and said bad RAM/Module failure. More or less, I had no ABS. I ran it as normal and never really had any issues.
During my recent State inspection, I failed due to the RED brake light (which came on with the ABS issue). My truck is at the shop getting another estimate now, but I am wondering what is usually a fair cost to have the ABS Brake Module Replaced (Parts & Labor). I have had shops give figures anywhere from $200-1000, which has me confused due to the large range.
I read around online that I can remove the module myself and have rebuilt for around $150, but just wondering if that's going to be more of a headache than its worth? I don't mind turning the wrenches, but if that does not fix the problem I am wondering if I will get the run around.

PS I tried the $25 Rear Wheel Sensor, but it did not help.

Basically the system has 5 "extra" parts.
3 wheel speed sensors - 2 front/1 rear. The controller module (CAB) and the hydraulic control unit (anti lock control assembly).
If it's just the CAB module it just basically snaps/screws into place. If it's the anti lock control assembly you have a bunch of brake lines to deal with and bleeding the system.
More likely it is the CAB that failed.
Ask them exactly what part needs to be replaced and go from there.
