It is basically an electronic ignition module and is supposed to help give you a hotter, longer lasting, spark.

If you had points or an older electronic ignition I can see the benefits of such a system.

I doubt you'll realize any significant benefits, just my opinion.

I've been thinking about putting one in my truck, too. It seems like it might give a little bit more complete of a burn, which would translate into slightly improved HP and MPG. If you do get one, get the MSD coil to go with it, and please report back on how you like it.

FWIW, I used to have a car with an MSD 7AL-2 on it and you could literally hear the sparks inside the cylinders when it was cranking. That thing threw lightning bolts!

We have a digital7 w/ HVC coil in the camaro. You wanna talk about a hot spark...the coil itself is 5 pounds!

We were playing with a spark plug/MSD7AL3 on the bench one day...had the ignition powered on and turned the distributor one pole...ZING!

Good question. The MSD #8228 coil is the OEM replacement, so it seems like that would be the one to get, but I'm not sure. I can't find one that specifically says it's for MSD ignitions.
