Actually I think you nailed it...Sorry!

I just came in from giving the fan a better wobble inspection and it's not solid. I think it's starting to go and a new water pump is in order.

Well, that sucks. It's much easier to tighten up a radiator hose.

I'm doing search on replacing the water pump without removing the shroud & radiator...Is this possible?

Should I not instal the fan on the new water pump since I have the electric fan?

Nice...Replacing the WP was easier than I thought. My awesome wife made a parts run while I started draining coolant and removing the shroud (easy) and the water pump.

I'm going without the mechanical fan for now.

Here's my current question:
The pump has a rubber O-ring-ish gasket, molded to fit the channel/groove in the pump. Do I use RTV sealant or not? I don't see any traces of RTV from before but I'm not sure I shouldn't use something.

Smart move on the removal of the mechanical fan. It takes 30 seconds to put back on if you decide you don't like not having it.

As far as RTV or not, I have never heard of anyone using it. And, judging by the design of that pump and the groove in the timing chain cover, I would say there is no need for it.

No on the RTV. The o-ring is the gasket.

Just make sure it is seated properly and you torque it evenly.

Well I've been waiting to post an update as not to jump the gun with excitement but I can say my oil (Main seal replaced) and water pump leaks are solved. Any former residue has finally cooked off the block and there's not a single trace.

I saw in another post a guy paid $400 bucks for a "onsite" water pump replacement...I'm in the wrong line of work (Manager with Costco Wholesale). I replace a co-workers radiator and water pump a few weeks ago in his Grand Cherokee for parts and fluid totaling $385 (Which included a Chilton's manual). His highest estimate came back at $1700 from a "trusted" shop, $900 from the dealer. I did it for a Starbucks coffee & a maple bar to help a friend.

Next is a 4 way brake job for another co-worker...Maybe I can get some lunch for that one.
