Default Cost of transmission replacement

I have a 2001 Dakota Sport 4x4 3.9L Auto. The truck over revs between 1st and 2nd and won't stay in second. My shop is going to replace the transmission and Quoted me $5430 Canadian (I live in Regina SK Canada). This seems high to me, anyone else?

5 grand for a tranny is insane.

I'm Canadian as well so I hear you on the high prices but thats just stupid. Try a wrecker or used auto parts place and get a tranny and then bring it to a shop.

Yes the labour is the expensive part but maybe around a grand or two.

If my math is right you shouldnt pay more than 2,000 CAD. When my 98's tranny went. I got quoted 1,600 USD from aamco(dont know if you guys have those or not) Thats for them pulling the tranny and total rebuild with a new torque converter and 18 month warranty.

get a second opinion there are places that will remove your busted tranny and replace it with one they rebuilt earlier. then they will rebuild yours and sell it to someone else. I had a 98 intrepid one place wanted 5000$ to rebuild mine, I told them all I could afford 2500$ they told me that would be ok so I took it some where else got it for 1800$ and that's what they did

Finding a reputable tranny shop is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. I wish I had a dollar for every tranny "rebuilt" that got a new solenoid pack slapped in them. Had a shop at Ft. Leonard Wood quote me $3,000 for a 'rebuild'. Put the car on the lift, changed the solenoid pack, filter and fluid at the incredible cost of about $300 total and the car is still going 3 yrs. and 60,000 miles later without a hiccup.

The truck isn't even worth 5000. You can get a full truck cheaper. My 03 4.7 4x4 was 4500
