Default 42re issue

ok so im ina pinch. i think it just a lack of fluid, but the truck wont go into reverse. reverse is another drive gear.. im betting its a lack of fluid. wich means i lost more than i thought.. please help. im stuck and dont need a 1400 dollar trans shop bill.

im praying that its a low fluid issue.

Heck man fill it up and see what happens. Did it work? Bad news though if it is not a low fluid issue. In a lot of cases when a tanny goes reverse is ussually the first sign of all gone.

due to weather, i havent had time to add more fluid.. its got like like 6-7 quarts in there, but it takes like 2.5 gallons, and i have 3 more quarts to add tomorrow (Sunday) and check what its gonna do. i sure as hell hope its either fluid or cable adjustment (gear shift).
what origionally happened is i pulled the motor and trans, and spereated them. stored trans on 2 tires to keep from fckin up the pan. the fill tube came outta its seal (the wife walked into it) and trans fluid spilled (approx 2 quarts) then when i put it all back together, i had a pinhole leak in the trans cooler lines. and lost another quart.. the trans cooler held half a quart (incl lines) i probably lost more than 3.5qts. but i have put 2.5 back in, and have another 3 more to put in, plus what was left in trans.

so i really do think the trans is just waay too low on fluid. im assuming that even on extreme low fluid it has enough to go forward, but not enough to build pressure to actuate reverse valves.. i know its not going in to reverse because i cant see the reverse lights, and i have a light indicator panel (from school bus) in the cab(temp wired, looking for perm location), and no lights are tripping for reverse

Beside it maybe being low on fluid, are you sure the transmission shift linkage is adjusted correctly? Maybe it isn't in reverse.

The reverse light switch, in the tranny pan, is actuated mechanically via the shift lever.

after filling it, thats the next step, check the linkage motor off key on to check for the lights.

ok so i called a stealership, they told me that air could have gotten into the valve body, and the trans needs to be bled. which could be causing the problem, as for the reverse lights, i might have mucked that up.. not sure if its a ground or bad switch, but getting it to move is top priority

Just curious, how do you bleed the transmission??? i am having the same issues.. all of the forward gears work fine and no reverse..

If i watch my tach as i shift from N to D i feel it go into gear and the rpm's drop one space. if i shift from N to R the rpm's stay the same. I have lights when i put the shifter in R so i know the linkage is ok...

I know i am probably on the road for a full rebuild but, i thought maybe i could try "bleeding" it first to see if it helps.

If you have manual 1st but not 3rd or 4th, it's the front clutch. If you have 3rd and 4th but not manual 1st, it's the rear band.
