Default Trans Tune Up Help

Did trans filter and fluid on my '03 Dakota 4.7lt. 5 speed auto model 5-45RFE. Calls for 5 qts. but looks like a lot more came out. So far I put in 7 qts. but dosen't move in any gear. Anyone know the exact amount that this trans takes ? Thanks

does it have an auxiliary trans cooler? Did you use the right filter? There's one that kinda fits but doesn't work, and one that does fit and does work. Early on, there was a big issue with this. The filter doesnt always seal up, and will let air in the valvebody.

If you put the filter on backwards that'll happen. It did in my 04 durango with the same tranny.

It's a common problem, the filter. OEM is the only way to go.

Default Trans Tune Up Help

Hey Guys, thanks for the responses. Don't have auxiliary filter. Did use after market filter but it matched up exactly. Hate to take apart again but if I gotta then I gotta. Is this considered a dry fill according to the shop manual? If so it says 9 to 14 qts in the shop manual ??

No it wouldn't be a dry fill as you still have fluid in the torque converter. Should only pour in the amount you drained out.

check out this EXTERNAL filter. i have one on my 01 dak. i think it will keep you from doing the internal filter as much. i think most mopar trans are 3/8 tubing. point of history: chrysler put external filter on New Yorkers 1962 throu 1964.
..
man o man i about forgot yes its a cut & past sorry. __________________
after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose. Reff:http://www.magnafilter.com.au/magna-fine.html*
2. for other sizes wix 58964 5/16 tube size reff:http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...sionfilter.asp

Default Trans Tune Up Help

Hey guys, problem FIXED! Had to redo whole tune up with OEM filter. Also found out there's a 2nd spin on filter in there the size of a motorcycle's. Also took 7 qts. of fluid to fill. Baby purrs like a kitten now. Will never use aftermarket again. They don't work on this trans. Thanks for the help.

Glad its fixed.

This makes me weary when I do my pan drop and refill this summer. I bought a filter/gasket combo (aftermarket ofc) before the winter since I planned on doing it then but never got around to it. I have the 42RE though... Hope I didn't just waste $30 or so!
