Is this an aftermarket tach?

Normally you tap off one side of the coil.

If it's a factory tach, it's run via the CCD bus along with the rest of the gauges - the PCM supplies a signal.

Truthfully you don't need a tach I go by feel its not hard to figure out I'm guessing you have a manual trans you are probably doing good now just keep doing it its more ego than a needed Item.

Even when I had a tach I never looked at it

ive driven standards all my life, its not just to have one or for ego. i like to check in on my rpm situation once and a while, i can also monitor fluctuations and what not. plus when im driving a standard i like to see the tach there. when driving an automatic, i hate seeing a tach.

to judge MPG a vacuum gauge works best. a vacuum gauge is the ONLY gauge that tells you the load on the engine. good one are hard to find.

I also like having a tach, and it has nothing to do with ego. It has everything to do with hitting my shift points when I'm embarrassing some ricer Honda in the stoplight drags.
