Lost 4x4 after muddin 2001 DAKOTA SPORT

I wasn't implying that you were. My comment was directed more towards the OP that he needs to do some more diagnosis before just going out and replacing parts. That may mean pulling it and opening it up.

What mode(s) is it noisy in?

What does he mean "hook a computer to it?" If it shifted then the actuator is likely working - at least partially.

Unfotunately the FSM doesn't give much. Basically it comes down to:
Internal transfer case components binding, worn, or damaged.

The noise was in 4wd. It quit when I put it in 2wd. Ever since then it won't go into anything and the light indicator isn't on.

You should be able to pull faults of of the tccm with the appropriate scanner, most likely a DRB (dealer).
