Default re-using oversize brake pins / upright/spindle assy

Knew the day was coming, finally got down to the backing plates today.

I have oversize pins in 3 of the 4 slides. I went to the O'Reilly distribution store in search of a shadetree mechanic employee, and found two of them. Both said I should be fine re-using the current oversize pins, just to use copious amounts of blue loktite on them. They both said the reason the package says not to re-use them is because the loktite wears off when they are removed. They also both said that as long as the holes do no get sripped out, I should be able to just get new oversize pins in the worst case, and they should still tighten down, that I shouldn't need to replace both spindle/upright assemblies.

Can anybody agree/disagree to these comments?

What Lb. do you crank them down at?

I just snug them up as I almost stripped mine out but managed to make do and they have been good as gold for a number of years now.

I never use any Loctite on them and reuse the same pins never had one come out on me.

All they are is a guide pin for the caliper to slide on they usually don't take all that much abuse all the stress is on the knuckle during braking

I would think you are right about the blue Loctite. That's what is on the pins straight out of the package and it makes sense it could wear off when you remove the pins. I have one of the oversize pins on my left front caliper. Next time I do my brakes I will be sure to buy some Loctite. I remember the package said not to re-use an oversize pin. I guess they sell more oversize pins that way.

you're talking about oversized, right?

We stripped out the original pins 3 years ago by putting them in with the air ratchet instead of the hand ratchet. oops.

They are the same part just oversized threads correct?

You used an air ratchet tisk tisk magnethead you know better

Truthfully they are only guides for the caliper so they float freely and self adjust all the strain is on the knuckle during braking.

If only a new knuckle was $100 not over $900 life would be good.

my thought exactly. And If I replaced the knuckle, I'd get one from 03/04 with the big brake package.

by wore out, do you mean you re-used them multiple times, or just once?

So the helicoil drill bit and tap is bigger than the oversize pin threads?
