Manual transmission questions
I am trying to locate a nv3500 transmission (4wd) for a project. Can you tell me if the v6 and v8 Dakotas both used the nv3500 or was it the v8 only. Also, does anyone know what years used this transmission. Thanks for your help.
Edit to add, I know that the earlier Dakotas (87-96) used the nv2500 or equivalent transmission in the v6 but the 94-96 v8 got the nv3500. Really just trying to clarify what manual transmission the v6 97 and up used.

Actually I believe the AX15 was supposed to be an improved version or equivalent of the NV2500. They were used in the v6 trucks like mine (87 4wd) The NV3500 is considered a med. duty transmission and was used in V8 apps. at least in the first gen. Dakotas.

I will try to find out if it is the same. If so, I believe you have given me a larger vehicle selection to look at!! So far, the only real difference I have found is the 97 and up, have finer teeth in the transmission along with different synchronizers. Supposed to make them quieter and shift better. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the offer, but there is a guy (ragged89) who swapped a nv3500 out of a 97 into his 89. He has said it was 23 spline just like his orig. trans was. Basically said everything went smooth. The only difference is the nv3500 is about 5/8 in shorter then the orig. transmission in his 89.

Also, there is this-

All 5 of these transmissions can be interchanged as a complete unit with the following caveats.
"Drop in" interchanges between GM S (S10 etc.) and C/K trucks will require modification of driveshaft length and crossmember placement. GM S models have a longer tail-shaft than C/K trucks.
Master & slave cylinder bore sizes went from standard to metric in 1992 (Master: 11/16"->18mm, Slave 13/16" ->20mm)
GM and Dodge transmissions will not interchange.
The case and bellhousing are one piece with differing, engine specific, bellhousing bolt patterns.
Dodge uses Dodge specific input shaft length, spline count, and pilot diameter.
Dodge output spline count differs from the GM units.
