There are a lot of things it could be.

Does it happen more when it's hot or cold out?

I'd start by checking the 5v supply from the PCM. You can measure it at the cam or crank position sensors.

I'm going to recommend exactly what DakDan the moderator said, it sounds like the crankshaft position sensor....I've been down that road, sounds exactly like the issue....fairly easily to change out, 60 bucks, one connection and two bolts....pretty sure it's a 10mm socket....up next to the flywheel on passenger side....

The no bus problem negates the coil I think

Bad IAC or bad coil would make it run like sh*t, but not cut off clean like that. Also the code would be misfires for bad coil. Reminds me... gotta pick up a few spare coils from a crashed unit at the junkyard. At nearly 260K, mine may take a crap. Is the PCM plug and play if the same part number is obtained?

A bad coil will work then just cut out, a poster had a Dak that would run then die when hot I suggested the coil he pulled it out and it was cracked open. Older Dakotas 3.9, 5.2, 5.9 and my 2.5 have only one coil not multiples like the 4.7 and 3.7 so if the one coil cuts out the car dies from no spark.

Gotcha, thanks for the knowledge. I pictured coils sitting on top of the spark plugs.

A bad coil should not throw the "no bus" message though. That's something killing the CCD bus - usually a short on the 5v supply.

Yea but if its shorting out why is it intermittent if its shorted its shorted I'm going with the PCM as that's how my PCM acted before it got replaced intermittent shut downs bucking on and off just on and off strange things going on poor performance.

But I know with wiring an intermittent wire brake is possible seen it happen.

This is for an '00. It's "almost" identical to your '99.
