Default stupid question '97, camshaft sensor or distributor ign pickup?

does the '97 3.9 have a camshaft positioning sensor or is it called a distributor ignition pickup? Called parts house, they have no listing for cam pos sensor. there is a distrib ign pickup available. look on ebay for cam pos sensor, there is a picture of distributor ign pickup. Call dealer, they have a cam pos sensor, special order. What gives?

i would think same part, different name....maybe some carry-over from the 96 year terminology?

It's in the distributor so likely called the distributor ignition pickup.

Don't you love generic names?

Same thing. Haynes manual even notes it's often called by other names.

Service manual calls it a camshaft position sensor. You'll find it called a number of terms like the distributor ignition pickup and distributor pickup coil. Attached pic from service manual.

Default Thank you

I've been having the same problem diagnosing this issue. Code P0340 calls for camshaft position sensor but the pick up coil that goes under the distributor kept popping up in searches. This finally answers my question on what exactly to replace!

Yeah, Pickup coil/cam position sensor... Two names for the same part. It is a tad confusing....
