Default 99 dakota 4x4 problems

If anyone could help I sure would appreciate it. Last night we got 14 inches of snow. I had my truck in 4x4 almost all day. I had to go pick my wife up at work later in the evening and I took it out of 4x4. I went to go put it back in and it feels like the manual shift lever shifts but all I hear is grinding. I can drive the truck but when the lever is in 2x4 the grinding is worse when I shift it to 4x4 the grinding stops but I still do not have 4x4. It's a 99 dodge dakota sport 5.2 manual shift transfer case. Can anyone help?

Have to get up under and see if the linkage is bad or you have an internal issue with the transfer case and/or front diff.

Thanks for the reply. Linkage is fine at least it looks OK. Is there anyway to tell if it's the transfer case or beyond that?

How do you know you don't have 4x4?

It's not uncommon for the front differential pinions to fail. It could also be the transfer case. You most likely have a part-time transfer case. It's only intended for slippery conditions, no bare pavement at all.

14 inches of snow yesterday. Not an inch of dry pavement. I have no 4x4. It all ice here. As I can tell it's either a chain in the transfer case or something in the front differential

Pull the cover on the front diff. It's the easiest.

Finally got it all thawed out in a heated garage so i could get a better look. It is a snapped passenger cv shaft.
