Default '95 Posi Trac rear in 2000 Dakota

Hello. I decided to make another post because I have more questions. I discovered a 1995 Dakota for parts, and the asking price for the whole truck is $500. It has the 3.9, 4wd, 5 speed, and a posi trac rear. What I'm really interested in is the posi trac. Would I be able to swap that into the rear of a 2000 Dakota with the 3.9? If so, what work would need to be done? Is it a relatively easy task? Thank you all for any further replies

I'm still new to the forums. Where should I post a thread like this?

In the section appropriate to the vehicle. You have a 2nd gen Dakota, so, this is where you want to be.

Not sure about the swap though.... not as familiar with the dakota running gear.

Okay. I thought this was the right place, I just figured there was a specific section to rear end swaps. I think I'll at least measure the track of the posi rear. If I can't swap the gears in then I guess I'll swap in the whole axle lol. Width oughta be a good place to start, as that would mean a lot would bolt up. Both axles even have the same wheel bolt pattern

Looking at rockauto, the part numbers for a dana carrier are different. I see the 95 is 27 spline, and the 2000 is 29. But if both are the exact same width, you may be able to swap axles along with the carrier. But im just guessing.

I went back and read your post again. Are you willing to pay $500.00 to mainly get the carrier? If so, I would buy new for less. http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/d...+carrier,13098

IMO a posi carrier is a wear item, and likely will need rebuilt. Again, I would buy new.

edit to say, all of this is assuming you have a 8.25 and not the 9.25 in your 2000

It's 500 bucks for the whole parts truck, so it might be a good deal. The frame is really bad, but if weren't for that it'd be able to pass inspection and be driveable. I could probably find someone who needs parts from a 1st gen, so I might even make money. Although it is a good idea to just buy new and save a lot of time. I also had another idea, would I be able to swap heads if say I wanted to do head work on the current heads on the 2nd gen? That way I'd still have a running and driving vehicle if it takes more than a day

It's a different generation of truck though, so in reality, not much is going to be useful for you......
