Default 01 4.7 Quad Cab Pop-pop noise from front middish.

So my truck has this double pop noise it makes when making a sharp turn with speed from the driver/middle front of the vehicle. It also has a bad fluid leak from the steering column. Any idea's on what it could be? I tried jacking it up and testing the ball joins for play but I they looked pretty good. The boot is still intact for both uppers and the lower is just now getting cracked. It sounds almost like its closer to the engine. The steering isn't hard to turn and is nice and smooth. The shocks are on there way out though.
Any help is appreciated.

There are no fluids in the steering column...... can you post a pic of where it is leaking from?

Pop noise is likely control arm bushings, ball joints, or sway bar bushings.

Sorry, What I meant is that it it was being leaked on. It was from the return line on the reservoir.

So it shouldn't rust.

I don't think there is anything electrical that far down the column, so, fixing the leak (replacing the leaking line) should be the end of that problem.

Okay. Is there a good guide for checking play? I wasn't really confident that I was checking right. While they didn't seem to I couldn't really find anywhere to get leverage with.

To check ball joints, I jack up the front end of the truck, so I have 4 to six inches between the tire, and the ground, slide my pry-bar under the tire, and lift up, and see how much the ball joint moves. (lower.) basically, if it moves at all, it's going bad. For the uppers, just grab the top of the tire, and pull in/out, if it moves, upper joint is bad.

They can look fine, but still be bad. If they are dry, they will pop.

Can you bounce the suspension by hand, and make it pop?

If I bounce it by hand it has a bit of a squeak but no pops or anything like it. Also while driving this popping only happens when turning right with speed. I noticed that my passenger side upper is bolted in while the driver side is still rivets. Could I take that as the passenger was replaced and the driver is oem? Also the truck is "bouncy" while driving.

Yep, the joints with bolts have been replaced. As for 'bouncy', you likely need new shocks.

Okay. Thanks for the help. I'll go ahead and try what you said. Either way I'm thinking it might be worth just rebuilding the whole suspension. I really like my truck and I've already dumped a fair penny into it. I might as well stick with it.

Is it 4 wheel drive? If so, the pop you hear could be coming from the internal differential in the transfercase
