I'm thinking he means the PCM, powertrain control module. If so, a couple of bolts and 4 connectors on your '04. But, it needs to be programmed for the specific vehicle application.

You can by a remanufactured unit or get the existing one repaired.

Prices vary.

My 2000 Dakota R/T 5.9 L has a check engine light on, a P1491 code reading and the electric rad fan isn't coming on. The 10A & 30A fuses check out, the relay has been replaced (looked to have been hot) and the circuits check out. My Chrysler dealer diagnoses a failed circuit in the Powertrain Control Module but says Chrysler no longer has one for my vehicle and they can't get one "from their usual sources".
I've looked on line and the aftermarket / remanufactured sources I've found so far either don't have anything for my Dakota or seem to have terrible reputations for service, units not working, poor or no communications and bad business practices.
Any advice?

What's the part number on your pcm? Find that, then google search on it. See what comes up.

This is pretty much what I've been doing at this point. A couple more suppliers to check out but several looked at so far have very poor customer satisfaction, some even described as scams. Extra complications seem to arise as I'm out of country (Canada) in actually getting the part ordered, paying shipping costs including for returning units that don't work, fees charged to return units that don't work etc.

Try Solo PCM. Couple members here have had good results from them.

Unfortunately, I don't think ANY of them have a 'good' reputation....
