Well, I did it again - bought the part I needed before knowing what special tool I'd need to replace it.
My oil gauge dropped to zero a while back and now I'm ready to replace the sender unit. From what I can tell, it's underneath in the area of the oil filter. I've seen some Youtube videos that mention an extra deep 1-1/16 socket to fit over the entire unit. Can I do it with just an open end? Any help from the quarantined masses would be appreciated.

 

If it's the same sensor as the other engines, a crescent should be fine - provided you can swing one in there.

 

Odd that the Service Manual doesn't show the location for the 2.5. Guess I'll slide under tomorrow and look for it. Are crescent wrenches still around? I don't think I have one anymore! I never trusted them on a hard to break nut.

 

unless they changed the location on the 2000 it's next to the distributor.

 

I used a small channel lock the replace the sender on my 4.7L.

 

I am finding out more and more that 2000 was the year to change things up. My distributor is on the left side behind and below the AC compressor. I'll get the ramps out and get under the front end. I know I read somewhere that the sensor is down by the oil filter.

Which brings up a second question - how do you keep your engine so damn clean? Mine has never been clean and I drive through the farming country 30 minutes each way to work and back. I have to park on a street that intersects a state highway with oil industry trucks and farming trucks driving by 24 hours a day. So I get my share of dust. I'm just fearful of driving to the 25¢ car wash and not being able to restart the engine.

I kept the head off to make the engine install easy after the install I bolted on the head made the install very easy things were not so tight.

Only hard part is the 2.5 head is a little heavy.

Your 2000 should have the NV-1500 trans my 98 has the AX-15 trans.

 

I searched on Google and found there actually is a socket just for removing the OPS. Hot Damn! Ore illy has them in stock and I don’t even have to get out of the truck.

 

Well, finally located the son of a buck. To the front of the distributor. under the AC compressor.
Maybe you were on target 98DAKAZ. I just didn't recognize the area without the head on the engine, plus mine is rather filthy.
