Didn't mean to sound so harsh on AZ but the state I moved from was way better all around at the time the move was about a need in the family and the easiest most economical solution in my life.
Beyond that AZ sucks sorry AZ, from lots of great quality shopping and thousands of good automotive solutions to poor shopping and low quality automotive shops and low quality roads.

Happy Saturday everyone... After telling myself last night I was going to take Saturday (it is Saturday right?) off, I just couldn't bring myself to stay away from the truck. I completed the front end teardown, all wiring associated with engine removal and pulled the valve covers.
I am pleasantly surprised and I think happy with what I am seeing. All the rockers are in place, pretty clean inside for 178k miles on the odometer. I looked into each intake port and valves look good and in place so my worries about a dropped seat are in the background for now.
I put the breaker bar on the crank bolt, solid will not budge, even after several days of soaking with Marvel. Might have spun a rod bearing or fried mains. Timing chains are all in place and tight, all the guides look and feel good.
The top end does seem a little dry, but it has been sitting for 3 years. No burnt oil smell cool smells normal. I will cut open the Fram (cough cough) filter later with a chain cutter.
I'm a little concerned about the surface rust on the sides of the cam lobes. It may not be stuck rings holding the engine solid.
I agree... I am quite certain whatever has happened is bottom end related. Can't wait to get the motor out and the pan off... After the title issue is resolved.
I went back out and took a better look at the cams. The discoloration I think you are referring to isn't rust. It seems more highly oxidized kind of like a bluing and I was unable to wipe it off or make it smudge. The top of the engine is very dry. The picture (left side head) of the chain guide is so dry it is almost chalky. The right side is a little better and has some oil pooling in the lowest parts of the head casting. I am wondering if the oil pump failed.
