Default Transmission question

Hello All,

Dakota 98 3.9......auto tranny is slipping when turning corners hard. Guess it's giving me a warning. Anyway, thinking about replacing. What's the best route? Should I order one and have it replaced or rebuild? Suggestions appreciated. 265K on the clock, always took good care of the trans with oil changes every 60K or so. Thanks!

The choice is yours. Both are only as good as the rebuilders.

I don't see any reason why not to rebuild your current transmission. You know it's history which is more than you can say for a replacement unit. The don't replace all the parts but inspect them and replace what does not meet serviceable specs. Just make sure to check out the shop and the warranties that they offer.

Have you checked the fluid level? Sounds like it might be just a bit low.

As long as you're sure you're having transmission troubles, I'd look at a rebuild first.
Chances are it'll be the most economical fix.
Get a good reliable rebuilder to do it.
Was on a road trip from Anchorage to Hilo when I had mine rebuilt in San Diego 8 years ago. It's still running smoothly.
Don't mistake a limited slip axle causing tire squeaks for tranny probs.

^^^ This... It only happens when turning corners hard? I'd be checking + changing the fluid and filter/s first. And make sure you're checking it using proper procedure, so you don't get false readings.

Thanks all for the advice, will look into all options. This has been going on for a while now and only noticeable when turning corners hard. I did check the fluid, it's up where it belongs. I will double check as this was my first thought as well.

Don't overlook the filters then. Fluid pickup is usually done through a flat screen filter. Your description lends itself to this being some type of fluid starvation issue.
