I got the differential out on my 01 ,2wd automatic. What tool works best on carrier bearings ? It it tight there an not a big lip to hook to.
Also should I look at the pinion bearing an how do i tell if the bearing in it is bad without taking it apart..
got outside bearrings off but inside is in there ..
Thanks

You want to pull the pinion, and look at those bearings as well. The outer bearing is the one that usually goes bad first. New seal would be a good idea too. Keep in mind, I do believe there is a crush sleeve in there, and you will have to replace that as well.

If you have an inch-pound torque wrench, take a reading on just how much it takes to turn the pinion, and when you reassemble, try to get as close to that number as you can.

if i disconnecr drive shaft an spin it freely will that tell me if thats the issue?
Note i didnt hear hum til after 20mph an cant turn it that fast by hand.

What Ft lb for carrier cover bolts?

These rear ends are known more for bad pinion bearings than carrier bearings. This is the time to do them with the carrier out. I have not been inside one of these but a little research will get you the specs. A cheap needle type inch lbs torque wrench will work for the pinion pre load.

That is just a lock for the adjusting nut. Adjust it where you want it, torque everything down, then put the clip/bolt in, to hopefully keep it from turning.

Thats what I thought .Not sure why its so adjustable . I put it back as originally in.
How tight should i fiT that slotted wheel in into cover. Against bearing?
Enough to let bearing an diff have a bit of movement 1 slot edge viewable on outside.

On those, I am not sure. Should be a procedure for setting backlash in the service manual. If you don't have one, we have several available in the 2nd Gen Ram FAQ/DIY section. They are for full sized trucks, but, I think its the same axle.
